GLOBAL HYDROGEN FUEL CELL MARKET COULD EXCEED $49 BILLION BY 2027

The hydrogen fuel cell market has been growing over the last few years and is expected to continue to see substantial growth over the next few years. A Hydrogen fuel cell is a device that generates electrical power by a chemical reaction via conversion of fuel (hydrogen) into electricity. Although batteries and fuel cells are both considered electrochemical cells and consist of similar structures, fuel cells require a continuous source of oxygen and fuel to run, similar to how an internal combustion engine needs a constant flow of gasoline or diesel.

CANADA LAUNCHES HYDROGEN POWER STRATEGY

Canada will be investing in hydrogen fuel as a critical step in the path towards reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O’Regan announced on Dec. 16.
The government has launched the Hydrogen Strategy for Canada, a framework that establishes a rollout plan for the development and promotion of hydrogen capture and fuel technology, backed by an investment of $1.5 billion. According to the announcement, the use of low-carbon and zero emission hydrogen has the potential to reduce annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 45 million metric tonnes by 2030 and create up to 350,000 new jobs by 2050.

CONGRESS REACHES COMPROMISE ON CLEAN ENERGY DEAL TO BE ATTACHED TO GOVERNMENT FUNDING BILL

House and Senate leaders have agreed to include a suite of clean energy innovation measures in a year-end omnibus spending bill to be introduced as soon as tomorrow.
A bipartisan energy package hitched to the spending bill, seen by the Washington Examiner, includes provisions to boost technologies such as advanced nuclear power, energy storage, carbon capture utilization, and direct air capture.
Supporters say the package would boost zero-carbon technologies that are only in the early stages of the development but considered important tools to address climate change. The language could be the best shot at passing legislation to make a dent in emissions in a divided Congress, argue supporters, which include Republican and Democratic-leaning environmental and business groups.

EUROPEAN GREEN ENERGY INVESTMENT

The industry’s current plans to install electrolyser capacity in Europe amount to 19,328 MW by 2030 [1] which translates into almost 11 billion EUR in electrolyser investments alone. Energy needs of these electrolysers are equivalent to the energy produced by approx. 40 GW of renewable capacity which translates to 71 billion EUR of CAPEX investments in renewables. Bearing in mind EU’s 40 GW #electrolysis target by 2030, the industry’s current plans to install electrolyser capacity in Europe amount to 19,328 MW by 2030 which translates into almost €11 billion in electrolyser investments alone.
